would this work if so how well

it would be almost impossible to set up and maintain a conventional UGF with sand. The only way that might have a shot at working would be a reverse flow arrangement and even this would need an additional pre-filter of some sort to prevent rapid clogging of the UGF plates.

If everything was perfect this would be an awesome idea, but just some many things can go wrong.

Wont work, sand is too dense for good flow, and too fine to not fall through most plates

not true Dr. Joe or Oddball uses a ugf with sand in there tanks but he said that he puts a filter pad over the ugf first;)

I belive that you've incorrectly labled that quote. It can work and work well on a reverse flow set up and if you take the time to wrap the UGF plates in micron mesh then it IS possible but My comment was and shall remain that for the average aquarist it's simply not worth the effort when other filtration is available.

In a standard UGF it will not work. My wife wanted some colorful sand added to our tank that has UGF. Looked real pretty for awhile. Eventually the sand disappeared, then it reappeared, in my canister filter. Im sure there are things you can do to prevent this kind of migration - but I dont think its worth it.
