I've been reading a lot of these forums and many members suggest going with sand. What kind of sand is best for cichlids and how do I put it in my tank? Won't it float and be cloudy for a long time? Also how do I clean it?

it takes a lot of rinsing to get the fine particles off, and even then some its going to cloud up your tank a bit before those filter out or settle down a bit...
well worth it though...be careful about the sand/sand box type, in home supplie stores, most will say not for aquarium use....i would guess that you can buy it in aquarium stores, but eh....we ~collect~ it....living by the shoreline its easy to find spots.....but one really has to be careful where your collecting, and rinsing it well is imperative!....its much easier to rinse buckets of it outside, just sluicing the clouded water out onto the ground..eh thats a bit harder in the cold weather! lol...

get pool filter sand, http://www.cichlidforum.com/videos/cleaning_sand.php
video on how to clean...

:iagree:

i have it in 2 of my tanks. The pool filter sand will clear up after a couple days and wont be cloudy again. When you vaccuum your sand it wont pick it up because it is to heavy so you dont have to worry about sucking out your sand. Any pool place will have this and, usually in 50lb bags for 10 bucks or so

yep pool filter sand looks great but Im having a hard time looking for a white one most of the pool sand I see is beige in color.

I'm guessing I'm gonna wanna take my fish out first right? Hoping mike isn't too sarcastic here;) Also, do I have to clean it once it is in the tank? Won't that cloud my water again?
