I wouldn't...and I don't.

These snakes are found in areas with well drained soils, not deserts...so they are not actually exposed to sand.

I've had my western for about 10 years now and he's never been on anythng other than CareFresh type products. I would only use paper based, low dust, high absorbancy substrates.
