ive got a bare bottom tank and i was thinking about sand, i already have black sand.. but i was thinking something more bright.. pool filter sand i hear alot about.. and its cheap. so i was considering that. is there any thing anyone would recommend?

i was tryin to get some sand.. some rocks and some driftwood, i got a few bottom dwellers and i know they would love it..

I prefer pool filter sand. Easy to clean, relatively uniform grain size, etc. It also provides a good root point of stem plants and it's less abrasive on bottom dwellers.

PS. Most pool supply stores sell 50lb bags for $10-15, not too bad.

I just bought pool filter sand and i really like it, very natural looking and doesn't get easily sucked up when cleaning it

i agree i just did convert to sand and pool filter sand is easy to clean and look great and my fish seem to love it

I've been using sand for about 6 years in my tanks. I'm using silica sand that's used for sand blasting houses and whatnot, 50 grit I think, it's pretty fine. Don't use playsand, it's very dirty and contains water soluble materials. I'll never go back to gravel. You do need to be sure to stir up the gravel when you do cleanings to keep from getting anaerobic pockets in the sand, just stick something down into it all the way to the bottom glass and stir it around a bit. Also it can become compacted making it difficult for plants to grow. I like it because it keeps the tank cleaner, waste collects on top of the sand making it easier to vac up. It's also fun to watch fish that like to dig get into it and move it around. I've never had any problems with it getting into my filter. I definitely recommend it.
