Setting up my new 100 gallon and looking to get some black sand, anyone have any idea how much I need? Whats some cheap sand that is aquarium safe. And I heard I can get some cheap sand from Home Depot or Lowes, is that true?

dimensions?
and yes, depending. pool filter sand and play sand work, but take a hefty bit of rinsing.

to me, that doesnt sound like enough actually. i have 50 lbs in my 55 gal and it gives me a little less than two inches. then again, that is a pretty thin sand bed.

I would probably go with 100 lbs. just so you don't have to make second trips. And most likely knowing how this hobby works you'll probably use what you have left over for something else in the future. I always keep a couple of bags of play sand around cuz I never know when I might need some sand.

Any recommendations on what type of sand to get? How's 3M Color Quartz? I found a distributor about a half hour from me that's selling 50 lb bags for $30.
