I'm sure there's 1000 threads like this, but do you have to use aquarium sand or can you use play sand if you wash it really well?

Depends on the fish. Play sand is very fine and gets stirred up easy. I like pool filter sand for natrual color and it's heavy so it settles.

So for my 75g if I buy two 50lbs bags of pool filter sand and wash it really well, it will be fine for bichirs and SA cichlids?

And I understand gravel but how do I wash sand?

yea pool filter sand! my cichlids love it.

i poor it in a bucket and toss the hose it there.
ive even just thrown it in with out rinsing it for my girlfriends tank and it didnt cloud up and the water tested fine lol i use HTH pool filter sand. its like 10 bucks a bag i think.

Use Leslie's Pool Filter Sand if it is available in your area. It is the perfect size. You can pretty much gravel vac it.

For you 75, you will need about a pound per gallon.

I dont find that playsand gets disturbed easily. Iv got some big fish, and others like to sif through the sand for food and it drops back down in a second. Only time the sand flies around is when I knock over my 1500gph pump.

varies on location, my hd doesnt even carry pool filter sand. most places wont carry pool filter sand in the off season. Just gotta find the places that do. Maybe ace?
