I am looking into sand in my 75 gallon cichlid tank with sa and ca cichlids in it. The sand is a little cheaper on line with free shipping but I am not sure how to clean it. What is the best way to clean sand without sucking it up. I am using a gravel vac with a garden hose hooked to it so it really has a great siphon going. please let me know how the sand will work and how to clean it.

just put the sand in a bucket, stick a hose into the bottom and swirl it around. the dirty water will overflow out of the bucket.

Just buy Pool Filter sand.

Its like $9 for a 50 lb bag. You can get it at your local pool supply store like Leslie's.

Then just clean it how i just said above. When the water runs clear, then scoop it in the tank.

Plus, pool filter sand is heavier than other sands, so you can use your siphon to clean it like gravel without it sucking all the sand out of your tank.

Also get a prefilter for you intake it will trap most of the sand before it gets inside your filter. I wash my pre filter out every 2 days and it always has tons of sand in it, The first week i put sand in my tank i woke up to my ac50 not working and motor hot, i unplugged it took it part and clean the fan and everything is good now havent had a problem since i installed the prefilter

:grinyes: But as for cleaning the sand, I would just use a pillow case to clean the sand. Put the sand in the pillow case and run water through it.:grinyes:
