What is the best sand for SA/CA cichlids? I have black gravel right now band there colors really pop but I have a geophagus who I’ve seen try and eat the gravel hence why I wanted to go with sand. Is there a certain color that makes their color pop? If so where can I get it?

pool filter sand and sand blasting sand work great imo. recently i have been able to find sand blasting sand in white. so i mixed them together and got a nice brownish tank looking substrate.

Agree about PFS.
Good looking, and heavy enough that it doesn't easily get sucked into filters and ruin pumps, like some lighter weight sands do (i.e. play sand).

Besides working well for cichlid eartheaters, it also works well for non-cichlid eartheaters like Gobiomorus.

Another vote for pfs - I just set up a tank with it and frankly it looks more natural than any of the aquarium sand you can buy.

I have tried many substrates and simply cannot find one for cichlids that beats PFS. It's 100% clean/safe and the grain size is perfect to not get stirred around and sucked up into filters. I really wanted a "black" sand to make their colors pop more but cannot find one that compares. I know a lot of people use blasting sand but I still am able to find enough "bad" information on using it that I just cannot make myself do it. To me, it also looks very natural in color.1.jpg
