My fish recently died due to what I believe was a bad case of columnaris. Treated the tank with meds but to no avail. Now I want to sanitize everything especially my canister filter. Was thinking about throwing some boiling hot water in a bucket and throwing everything in the canister into it like: filters, biomedia, those plastic housing containers and even the impeller. Is this a bad idea? Will the plastic possibly melt and will the boiling water harm the impeller in any way? Anyone have suggestions to sanitize this stuff after a disease outbreak? Either that or I was just gonna bleach everything...suggestions, comments welcome thanks

I would use bleach. I would fill the tank up 10 parts water to 1 part bleach. Plug in the filters and let them run like normal for a couple of days and you should be good. Whenever you're ready to add fish, just drain the tank completely, add a double dose of prime and let it run for 24 hours.

I had a horrible outbreak of some unknown and I bleached everything. I also baked my gravel in the oven to kill any bad stuff. Worked great had not outbreaks or issues after all that.
