I am setting up a new tank soon, and want to use creek gravel I have mined here locally. After rinsing the gravel, does anyone know a good way to insure no live unpleasant organisms make it. Maybe clorox??

I would say boil the gravel and add some salt to the water while boiling then rinse well, I use a big ban to heat the gravel till it evaporate all it's water after washing it

Boiling seems like the best bet, I'm not sure you need to wait for the water to evaporate though.

Boiling gravel in any quantity seems like an awful lot of work.

Rinse it well in a bucket to get the big stuff off... and add some clorox and water to the bucket of gravel, swirl it around some. Let it sit for a day or 3... then drain, rinse a few times, add some water and dechlor and you're good to go...

:iagree:

I use bleach all the time to sanitize my fish stuff. Like he said, use dechlorinator (I use prime) and allow it to soak for a couple hours (make sure your stir the gravel to ensure the dechlor is able to reach every aspect of the gravel).

I always boil my rocks and gravel. I just don't trust bleach and me together lol. What size tank are you putting the rocks in?

In fact i am not brave enough to take the risk of the bleach
I trust heat and fire more at least it is much easier to get rid of
