Thinking back from my college days of having the dwarf puffers. I was thinking about going back and dedicate a tank to the puffers however I'm SO immersed into the catfish/pleco community tanks that I seem cannot to let a tank go without any of my cats/plecos somehow fit into the tank

My question is since SAPs are "community" puffers towards each other can they tolerate others without the risk of nipping of the fins? I see them for sale time to time but never had the species only tank room for them.

ANYone have luck on certain mixes?

my idea of a setup would be a 75 g footprint with 8 of the SAP and few jaguar catfish planted tank.

Quick reminder that SAPs need 15 Gal for the first fish and 10 Gal for each additional considering all puffers are little poo factories. If you want to go with 75 Gal go with 5 SAPs max. if you want any other fish in it. I have keep them with upside down catfish, a South American bumblebee cat (this cat is 6 in), and whiptail cats with no really problems. I did have problems with keeping plecos and banjo cats- the SAPs stripped the fins and tails from them (lost the fish). All puffers are individuals, so if you are going to try a tank, make sure you have a backup plan for housing the catfish in case the puffers decide they are tasty.

Interesting! Maybe if a bumblebee worked its a very possiblity a jaguar might work... so 5 saps is duly noted.

Wanted to create a network of driftwoods,(alot of them) and floating plants for this type of a setup. To provide security for the Jaguars.

What about any type of tetras? though? I'm envisioning the need of additional colors in the background for a great schooling fish in addition to the puffers being the showpieces.

Now am on the hunt for some SAPs! Never forgot about tryin to have a tank of those fellas.

Don't forget the serious dental work each of these puffers will need about every 4 months.

yep! prepared to do that as soon as I get some! I guess I have to wait and special order those as it seems no one has em right now at the LFS.

Howdy,

I have kept 2 SAP's in a 55 gallon with 8 neon tetras, 8 rummey nosed tetras, a rubber lipped pleco, 5 amano shrimp, and one ghost shrimp. I have only lost a single fish with this setup in the last six months. About 2 weeks ago I lost one rummey nosed tetra. I believe, since I had just moved about 40 miles and had to relocate the tank, that this fish died overnight due to the stress of this event. The puffers were munching on him when I found him in the morning. He looked completely healthy the night before. Its been two weeks since that and I have had no other troubles. The SAP's ignore the fish, and they ignore the shrimp which is very surprising to me. I have not seen them nip anyone and I have not noticed any damaged fins. They destroy any snail they see though.

Initially when I added the puffers to this community tank I had 5 amano shrimp and 1 ghost shrimp. I fully expected to lose all of them to the puffers. When I moved two weeks ago I found that they were all still alive and kicking. I think the fact that there is a huge amount of plant life in the tank for them to hide in has definitely helped. I say this because I hardly ever see these shrimp.

The tank is very heavily planted with lots of driftwood and some ornamental rock. I have really enjoyed the SAP's so far. I feed them frozen blood worms and frozen mysis shrimp. I throw the blocks in frozen in an attempt to wear their teeth down. In addition, I raise snails in a separate tank, and throw them in there which they seem to appreciate. Like most puffers, they are very spirited eaters. I have noticed that, even after 6 months they still startle very easily. If they see you coming they seem to be fine but if you catch them off guard they take off.

As puffer punk stated above, they do require dental work. It has been six months they're teeth can be seen a small amount when they open their mouths. I have been paying close attention to see if I could wear their teeth down faster than they could grow them but it seems I have failed and dental work will have to be done. I have been watching videos on youtube and researching trying to get ready for my first venture as a puffer dentist. (add that one to the resume!).

Anyway, great fish, yes they have worked for me in my community tank.

I have recently added 3 SAP's to my 55 gallon community tank the seem to be doing great no fin nipping or an signs of aggersion towards other fish. I have a Jaguar cat, a Gold nugget pleco an some zebra loaches, an many other fish. They do not bother another fish an really cool an active all day long. I was really worried about my Angel Fish with its long fins but he has no signs of nipping. So far a great ad to my community tank. I'd say get them while you can cause I think getting them is a seasonal thing
