I'm thinking of getting a 240 with sapphire blue background. I'm wondering how my fishes colors will be with blue vs black background.

Does anyone have this color with their viejas, specifically synspilum, melanura, and bifas or would like to shed some light in general? Thanks!

I understand that plenty of people prefer blue backgrounds. To each his own and I would never criticize anyone for doing what they like, but I just can't wrap my head around ever choosing blue over black regardless of what the tank is stocked with.

I think it just comes down to personal taste, the fish should look good against either.

I agree with springs, unless you have ocean fish where seeing blue in the distance is normal, blue always looks un-natural to me. I have had some tanks with blue but usually switched to black when I had the chance. Here are some examples.

Nosferatu bartoni blue, bartoni black

Lepidiolamprologus blue

female haitiensus black

I'm also of the opinion that using a color like blue, or???? for a background or substrate tends to compete with the fishes actual colors

I always think black with a thick layer of green algae looks best, but as I said it all comes down to personal preference

Sorry for the sidebar, but duanes duanes I have to know the name of the catfish in the last pic. I was thinking a Syno Angel but I'm horrible at getting theses things right. I'm going to have to add that one to my must have at some point list.

I like black because it adds an illusion of extra depth and looks cleaner imo.
