I've got a 1000gal heated pond with 12 big koi, a 13 inch tiger oscar and a 6 inch juv. baramundi.

I've had one round of bacterial infection which i think was caused by stress in the koi from the oscar chasing them.

I'm thinking of getting a Saratoga (Australian Arowana) to go in the pond and was wondering if the Saratoga will chase the koi as well - or fight with the oscar.

Will introducing more hiding places in the pond help stop the fish getting stressed?

Anyone had experience with Saratoga with other fish?

Gday mate,i kept a saratoga for 5 years with alot of different fish eg. gars, knifefish, giant gouramis, oscars, tigershovelnose cat, murray cod, mangrove jack, irridecent shark and many cichlids just to name a few and he didnt show too much aggression them.i had him from 2.5'' and grew to 20''.id say the secret is get one when its small and let it grow up with them.

yeh that barra will outgro your 1000 gallon pond. you should get a leichhardt. they are not too agrressive and look awsome

isnt that a bit overstocked? 12 big koi, and as said before, the birramundi will outgrow that pond. i wouldnt add anymore big fish.

Firsty, mixing coldwater fish and tropical fish is a bad move. I presume you are not in Queensland as koi are illegal. You will also need a MUCH larger pond to house the koi.

Curious - why would koi be illegal in Queensland?

because they have taken over australian waterways and are seen as vermin and hunted with bows and killed. Thusly queensland they are illegal
