Hey i was wondering is it hard to keep saratogas(as in water condition) and have they been bred before and if they have how do u sex them and how do u induce spawning????????

Saratogas are easy to keep, hardy fish..grow big. Are mean as hell and probably will kill all tank mates, so must be kept alone. Are bred in farms, not in tanks.

No way to sex them beyond seeing them mate or dna testing..

:) Beautifull fish!!!!!!

i would forget dna testing, you will have to find someone with the know-how and equipment to do it. and that wont be easy or maybe non existant in australia.

Del, DNA testing isn't as sophisticated as you think it is. I remember doing lab works for chem classes from college that utilized techniques that are used for DNA testing. I believe it's a form of seperating technique that rely on factors such as molecule's mass--male and females have chromosomal difference in mass that is quite disctinct. Seperating chromosome from cells? Not that hard if you have a centrifuge. In fact, such work is done in university labs while culturing bacterias with added genes and etc.

they can do it out of a fish scale....

I recently tryed to find somewhere in South Australia that would DNA test fish with no success. The result were the same for most place, we only do blood ops or only do certain animals, which reminds me Del I will ring the Museum Tuesday and my mate only got back yesterday, I saw his mum today at the shops and she told me, he was gone 3 weeks on a that Uni exscresion (seems a long time to more to spend doing school stuff)

I don't think the technology/technique is an issue but it's more due to a lack of protocal established to sex this particular fish. People who are doing gene studies with bacterial cultures centrifuge out nucleotides all the time (I have a friend at Northwestern who does this regularly). Probably somone equipped with the necessary money and tool could make money off from sexing aros :D

so can i keep a large catfish and a tilapia with it
by the way at the moment i have a 120cm by 60 by 60. i know the fish can get huge as i have seen a massive one at the fish shop and when the sara gets to over 40 cm i intend to sell it. buy the way i seen some at the petshop really small around 10 cm total lenght. also something you all may find interesting at the petshop they kept it with bronze cory's pakistani loaches a few tetras and barbs no bigger than 5cm TL. and im sure some other stuff i just couldnt see because th tank was fairly wide it was octagonal. around 120 inbetweenone faceto the opposite with a filtration tower in the center. and the sara kept patrolling aound and around then i stuck my finger in the tank and it tried to eat it (hehe). i pulled it out before the sara got too close. anyway it was a pretty cool fish. i want oneeeeeee.
