Hey i just recently added two new satanoperca lucostica to my prized collection and now all of them died.

i am trying to get down to the basics of why and how.

let me explain what has happened first.

i have been keeping some jumbo lucosticas for quite some time trying to grow them even larger to go in with my ray tank.a while back some of them got hole in the head.i teated it with salt and metro.i also read that keeping these fish in high ph 8 like our tap water causes that problem sa cichlids.so i decided to buffer down with powder and add some amazon blackwater liquid because i wanted to encourage breeding.

on boxing day i found two decent sized ones at a lfs that the store owner told me had been their for 2 months.i added the two into the tank they both ate for the first two days than dropped like flies.after their deaths i noticed all of my jumbos were acting sick.and i could notice foggy eyes and fungus coming out of the gills, but what was coming out of the gills was darker in color maybe grey not you common white,so it leads me to beleive maybe it was not fungus but some sort of infection of infestation.i now lost all my jumbos minus one that i am nursing in pristine water in a seperate tank with a high salinity level and temp of about 31 or 89 degrees.

their were a total of 10 small lucostica
4 medium and 4 jumbos.
only one medium and one jumbo is still alive and all the smaller ones seem perfect, but they too are new additions and have not been in that tank that long.

Not sure if you have come across this yet- http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168667. Hopefully you can find what it was from there.

It's a shame to have lost your collection like that. Most would probably say you should have quarantined the new fish prior, including myself, but I also have just dropped newly purchased fish straight into my stocked tanks. So sorry for your loss. Don't let this discourage you from the hobby, just learn from it. Best of luck with your future tank inhabitants.

It definitely sounds like the new fish brought something in from the LFS. Quarantine is important, especially if you're dealing with expensive/rare fish. I learned this as a discus keeper, but basically apply it to everything now.

Sounds similar to what happened to my group of altifrons. Did you get any pics? I was told that my Geos most likely had columnaris.

Sorry for your loss man. You really need to check up on the water perams in the main tank if you don't want to risk your rays.. With a PH value of 8+ you can add all the wood, blackwater extract you want and it likely would not soften your water at all. Adding buffering agents can cause pretty wild swings in your overall hardness. Wild swings can easily kill off the bacterial colony in your filter and or fish. The first few times I moved a tank over to RO I crashed the cycle. Its pretty easy to do if you aren't familiar with your kh/gh.

And to top it off my big female Henlei ray just killed my largest most favorite red severum.she didn't eat it only pinned it down and suffocated it.out of all 8 sevrums she had to choose the biggest bigger than my hand.I don't even know how she managed it

I still have 13 lucosticas left guys the smaller ones are all good .I still have one jumbo left I need to treat him I think.what meds should I use.looked like fungus or bacterial infection.I have him in pristine water with a higher salinity level
