The white tip on the tail isn't always a a for sure way to tell the two apart. Sauger sometimes have the white tip but of course it generally as white as the tip on a walleye. A more definate way of telling the two apart is by the dorsal fin. Walleye have a solid colored dorsal while the sauger's is is transparent with black spots.
