I have 2 male and 2 female saulosi in a 29g. I bought them young so i could not determine their sex. When do they become mature? The dominant male is not starting to chase the other male and females around the tank. He is also doing this circle dance and doing a lot of twitching. I am pretty sure this is normal and most males do it? And should i be concerned about the other sub domninant male in the tank? will he be killed? thanks

Have you vented these Saulosi? You might have more than just the two males. But regardless, the twitching and the circling could be either attraction for mating or promoting dominance.

I did not vent. I thought that fish would be fragile to vent at the size. The two males are all around the same size and the two females are a bit smaller. When i bought them they were all pure bright yellow and then obviously the males changed colors. So Pharaoh are you saying that some of the others could be males too? because i have seen no color change.

Generally speaking with saulosi, as with my group, there will be two dominant males in the tank, one dominant and one sub-dominant. They will be the two with color. Males that fall lower in the hierarchy will not develop color until one of the other more dominant males are removed. You could try removing one or both of the males you have ID'd and seeing if either of the other color up. My tank originally had two coloresd males and the rest of the fish were yellow. I took out the two males and two more colored up. I repeated this and two more colored up. And so on. It is just one way to sex without venting, but venting is the sure-fire way to know.

wow i just learned something new about this species... very interesting.. and by the way nice fish

Ok. Thank you for letting me know that. I thought that all the males would change their color a little bit. I did notice that one of the yellow ones had a couple of extremely light colored black bars. I guess it is possible that that fish could be a male.
