Went looking for GT's at petsmart today. They were keeping 2.5 to 3'' specimens with the JD's of the same size in the same tank. I'm new to SA's so it took me awhile to make heads or tales of which was what. When I figured it out, (and even found one I liked) I couldn't help but notice that every single GT in the tank had a "nick" or a whitish blemmish on the tops of their heads. Not one JD had one of these spots and there is twice the amount of JD's in the tank. GT's are being harrassed a little by the JD's could it be a aggression issue and not viral? I'm waiting to purchase till I hear some responses. Also the terminal band on the dorsal and tail of the male I'm looking at appears to be light cream color. Will this turn to orange with age...that is what I'm looking for...a sweet gold saum from petsmart. lol
thanx

What you saw was a silber saum..more attractive IMO
If they have nicks or imperfections I would stay away. GT's are relatively common and you shouldm't have much trouble finding one elsewhere...Good Luck:nilly:

Silver Saums are really nice. Are they any tougher than a gold?
IMO golds typically are not tough at all and if they are its usually the females that are

My Silver keeps my Flowerhorn in check...
Thats a tall order

No, they are goldsaums. I work at petsmart. They are just stressed and not dominant. Bring it home and it will turn orange.

Yeah, I doubt that it's a silver too. Many GT's won't colour up in the fins until they get a bit larger. I've had it a few times where once they got larger and more dominant they'd get the gold colouration.

Well, I purchased my GT from pets mart, it was in good health. But we are talking about a $6.00 fish. If you are stuck on that one fish ( I have done that) and your loosing sleep (yep that too) and have a hospital tank, do it. I've purchased fish with ich b4 and put them up and medicated them and several months later added them to the big tank.

But if you feel you'll find one just as nice on their next shipment, I'd wait. Too bad your so far away, I have an adult Male GT I'm trying to find a home for.
Good luck!

LOL...Texas, it's funny how much the people on this webpage are exactly like me. thanx for the reply.

Nomad, How often does petsmart re-stock? Do they just get a new shipment in when they're low on numbers of a particular species? Or does it not matter how many of that particular species they have?

Depends on the store. They get fish everyweek, but only those they are low on.

I must say though, my petsmart GT I got bout a month ago at 1". Now he is about 2", and is gorgeous. I picked the most aggressiveone of the tank, to get the least stressed one. He was all brown with thin silver trim. Now, he is the typival blue color, with a THICK orange trim.

However, I thik mine is a male, so getting the biggest most agressive one of the tank should predict a male as well.

Not saying all will turn out as nice as mine is, but its possible.
