I have seen a lot of interest on savs here lately and I thought I would post some pics. I have seen comments that they are lazy and boring. From my experience over the past couple years this is far from the truth. They are very fun to work with. I use a hands off approach and handle them on a minimal basis. Since I do not handle them much the big one is a handful when I pick him up. He does not like being handled , so I pick him up as little as possible. I only use regular light bulbs in there cage with no damaging effects on bones (this was the first time the little one has been out doors).
I feed them mostly rats (about 80%) and barely any insects and the seem to be doing fine. These guys are pigs and always seem to be hungry. I can see how theses animals can be obese. If you put the food in there cage they will eat it. You need to feed them on there needs not when they beg for food. I think this is more the reason for obese savs then people feeding the "fatty" rodent diet. These guys are worse then my beagles when it comes to begging for food.
Another observation I have made is they seem to like company. When the big one was by himeself he was more lethargic. When I introduced the smaller one the seem to enoy each others company. They bask and borrow together all the time, eventhough there is room for the both of them. I would definitely recommend if you have sav monitors to get two. I think you and the monitors will enjoy themselves more.
These are all my personal expieriences so far. I always like to here others people opinions and expieriences.
