Hi I have a Savannah that keeps digging in her cage in the same corner a lot more then usual. She digs until she gets tired and goes and lies down and then goes back at it again. Is this normal? Our weather just got a lot warmer here is that maybe a factor? I haven't changed anything recently.

If it is a female, she might be digging to lay eggs. or there could be a defect in its cage that it is trying to exploit monitors are very smart animals, have had blackthroats in the past and savannah's both will do this. maybe change the substrate to indoor outdoor carpet or she might be looking for a good stroll around you house. get her out and let her roam for a while and she will use the extra energy on that instead of digging, good luck with her they are great animals and will bring you alot of joy. if you would like i can post some of my recepies for monitor food that will keep them from dying. Most people think that they eat mice and they will cause a monitor to die of empactions.

Oh would love that! I am constantly looking for new things to feed her, I can't stand to just constantly feed any animal the same thing. I wondered about the possibility of her laying eggs but I have had her for 4 years and I have never seen any eggs. I have eco earth in her cage now I might try the carpet, I had it when she was little and she always hid under it. Im not even for sure it's a girl, some guy that supposedly breeds them told me that she was. Is there a way to tell? Thanks so much.

Yes they do. Sometimes a male will evert a hemipene when defecating (mine used to). My guy would do a lot of digging also, then he figured out he could just lean on the doors of his cage and get them off-track, and get out. I was forever putting him back...of course at 20lbs and over 4' he couldn't really hide all that well. She might just want out. Is she digging on the cool side or hot, if it's the cool end maybe it's a bit too warm for her. Mine mainly wanted out so he could crap, never failed, if he got out there'd be a nice savanna pile waiting for me, ah good times :)

Too much mice can get them impacted, hissing roaches are an excellent food and won't impact them. You can feel all roaches or just supplement with them. Whole animals is the key though. Are you feeding mostly rodents now or something else?

For substrate I always used cypress mulch, good for digging and cheap

stay away from carpet.Worst thing.Use cypress mulch and a mix of soil.Try looking up the san diego zoo turkey diet.Very easy to make and not costly at all

Thanks for the info! She is digging on the heated side. Her favorite thing to do is to get out of her cage and poop in the first comfy place she finds, so I completely understand. lol She mostly eats rodents and eggs. I'm not proud of it I would much rather her eat better things I have found a few threads about feeding hissing cockroaches but they are really hard to find around here. I am prob going to Indy next month for their reptile show and I'm sure they will have them there.

IMO, these are the possibilities:
1-she's digging to find warmth, or get closer to the heat source.
2-She's digging to get away from the heat. They do this in the wild at the hottest time of day to keep from overheating.
3-she's trying to locate food.
4-she's looking for a spot to lay eggs.

They like to dig as previously noted. It doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about.

maybe she's looking for buried treasure? ;)
