so in a big box store they had a sale going, bichirs on sale for 3.50. this always ends up w/ people w/o the proper tanks for them getting these guys. There was one left, only 2 inches in a tank w/ 3 inch bala sharks, a lot of them and they were bullying the hell out of him. So I picked him up, I got room for him and felt bad for the lil guy, so he's going into QT for a bit then going in the 30 to get some meat on his bones then into the 70.

nice rescue! hopefully it'll be big in no time!

Is that a senegal bichir ? how come he be bullied by 3 inch bala sharks ??
because when polys are small they are very thin and at young ages they are very susceptible to being attacked by other predators. While a bala shark may not look like a predator, a poorly fed fish will try and eat anything to survive. Even if they weren't trying to eat the senegal they could have become very territorial in a very small space.

I wouldn't call that a rescue, but nice fish.

When you walk in meaning to only buy guppys for breeding stock, and you see a tiny senegal w/ at least 20 big balas (at 3 inches theyre easily 3 times the size of the senegal at 2) in a 20 ga tank getting whacked over and over, and only get him because if nobody else did that day he would have died from stress or wounds (he was kind of physically beat up, nothing major) its a rescue haha

He was the only one in the tank, and as Dr. B said they are very skinny at that size, no thicker then a worm really. Imagine that in a 20 gallon w/ 20 3 inch balas, he was being tormented i saw him get nipped 3 times in a few minutes.

I believe it was probably both, a big box store doesnt feed these fish (sens especially) properly, the balas were swarming on him. He would have been dead by the next day, and it was in a tank that was only about 20 gallons, and thats a generous estimate. Probably 15. Like i said, he was being nipped and pushed around by the balas. And there was no hide in the tank either, only one rock. I didnt really want a senegal, but i love bichirs and couldnt leave one like that, i have the room for it so why not
