For those with tanks several hundred gallons, if you have moved how much water did you save? Some references say just to keep filters and substrate wet, while others say save everything, and I'm guessing the answer is somewhere in the middle. I am interested in both fresh and saltwater.

I try to save atleast half.

for the freshwater tank i wouldnt save any just keep filter media damp and make sure new water specs are close to old

I've moved with 300+ gallons of tanks more times than I can to remember...

Each time I save as much water as I need to transport the fish... the rest is filled with new/fresh/clean water...

Naturally that is after I check the water parameters of the new home and make sure that the PH, etc is very close to the old house... if not then I take the time to acclimate each fish to the new water... but still use all new/fresh water...

PS - I keep only fresh water... but I've helped a couple of friends move buckets and buckets of salt water...

i don't see the point in saving the water. How is that any different than doing a 90% water change? If keeping some water is a necessity, than 90% water changes would have a negative impact on fishes.
