I am seriously considering a Savannah Monitor, and I really would like to know, what size cage I will need for a full grown....Plus I am a little hazy on their diet as they get older and crickets/other insects don't really fill their gut. Any help would be appreciated.

Google
if the animal is 4 feet long the cage MINIMUM would be 4 feet wide and 8 feet long

I love savs too but dont have the space,do you want a moniter that gets big,if not you can go for ackies, cost more, but are awesome looking and acting. Some mod guy on here has a few,not that he brags or shows them off or anything but he might be glad to introduce the m to you, your looking at rodents Im sure for a large sav,I dot know if you can use organic canned cat foods and such like a blue tongue skink.

No canned dog/cat food, it's not good for them and you'll regret it when he craps...trust me ;)

Yes, 8x4 ft. is a minimum, and I'd try for 2' deep substrate as they love to dig. Feed insects and whole rodents, crickets and pink/fuzzy mice for little savs, roaches and large mice/medium rats for adults. They can take down large rats as adults but personally I always preferred feeding multiple smaller prey vs. single gut-busting prey.

Most important, start with a nice healthy sav. A lot of them come in weak and sickly, but if you get a good strong one they're very hardy.

I'm that jerk with the ackies. :D You can see pics of them here. If you have any questions about them, let me know.

Haha I thought he meant Alex...I've been considering ackies for a long time, I hear great things. I'd like to try to set up a good sized "natural" type viv with ackies, I think that would be neat.

Yeah Alex is that other "jerk" with the ackies along with a whole mess of other cool varanids. They are neat little monitors and now that mine have gotten use to me, they run to the front of the glass to beg for food when they see me.

I've owned a lot of different lizards species over the years but there is something about monitors. They have such intelligent looking eyes as if they were studying you. Almost like the raptors from Jurassic Park, lol.

In the next few months I'm going to design new custom enclosure for them. I want to do something similar to what I have now but on a larger scale. It's going to be very natural looking like my other enclosures. Lots of rock work for them to crawl and hide in.

Monitors are definitely my favorites, in general. And the Teiids (tegus, ameivas...I'd love to be able to keep caiman lizards). I don't have the space to do a really naturalistic setup for a large species, so I figure it's a good time to try the little guys.

Definitely post some pics when those new enclosures happen.
