Its a cool idea but honestly just a plain old sponge would do it for me lol
It will work but it's not a supercharged version over the old version. You have that plastic piece covering an easy 90-95% of the sponge vs just having the sponge there with nothing in front of it. To make this work close to just using a sponge you would need to drill thousands of holes. Much easier to do what I did, takes less time but does cost a little more which out weighs the way it was done in this video.
I use to do that with my oceanic tank with 2 corner overflow. all the time i didnt have any sump so i plugged the corner overflow and did the similar way. The con to this is take some space from the tank. it doesnt work as good as it sound tho.
Thing, this doesn't really require any cleaning. I've had all mine running since Jan and have yet to clean them, they aren't even remotely close to being cleaned. On the plus side since Jan I haven't cleaned any type of filter like I used to with all those canisters. The tank space is very minimal, to me this outweighs the ugly sights of tubes, heaters, etc. that litter the tanks of 95% of fish keepers tanks.
