I put my Mustang up for sale on craigslist yesterday. A few hours later, I get this email:

Hello,

Did you still have this item for sale?

Best Regards
Steve.
I replied by saying yes, I just posted it.

He responded with:

Hi there,

Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that it's in
good state and that i will not be disappointed with it.I'm ready to
pay your asking price and to be honest, i wanted to buy this for my
son, but the issue is i am an oceanographer and i do have a contract
to go for which starts tomorrow and am leaving any moment from now.The
contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea
area. But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of
laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send
money via PayPal anytime.Since I'm requesting this transaction to be
done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the paypal fee/charges
on this transaction and if you don't have an account with paypal, its
pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to
www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I
have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will
take care of very necessary paper for me. So i look forward to hear
from you soon.

Many Thanks
Of course I already figured out it was a scam(to be honest the first post gave it away by him referring to the car as item). But for humor I replied again and stated that as said in the ad the car needs work(body and interior). I also told him I wanted cash and will not do paypal or any kind of check.

His third reply was about the same:

I'll not be able to come for face 2 face transaction or for the
picking up the item cause am an oceanographer and I've leave city for
work. The contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on
the sea area. But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use
of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send
money via PayPal anytime,Just get back to me with your paypal email
address or send money request to this same address, so that i can send
the payment into your account immediately and i will also want you to
get back to me with the full address where the item is located so that
i can arrange for the pickup also.

Best regards...
hahaha... notice, that never in any of his emails did he mention car. It was always item. I didn't see anything that stood out that pointed to me. He could send this same email to someone selling a fish tank.

Sad part is they do trick some people.

Ha! Always the same scenario, I'm surprised people still fall for this crap. In fact, If I get any email asking if the item is still available, I just delete it. I even put in my postings, that if you email asking if it's available I'll delete your email!

The best is when they change the item as you are discussing it:

Scammer: Yes we will ship your teacup yorkie as soon as you send us money through Western Union.

You: How old is the Yorkie?

Scammer: the Scarlet Macaw is 9 weeks old.

You: Wait, isnt that a bird?

Scammer: Yes it is a bird. Please send money. We wait on you.

lol, this guy was a bit smarter i guess

he kept urging me though to please hurry, it needed a home quick and it was hot over there and would love to have a new home and be loved and blah blah blah

and they always try to sound like they are some religious person doing a good deed. like this guy was a preacher, on a missionary trip to africa to help the poor and build a well or something and his stay got extended unexpectedly

funny thing was, you can tell in his text that he had an african accent. but he posted a picture of the teacup yorkie with an old white man claiming that was him

Yeah its pretty typical. I know it is controversial, but you can turn the tables on them and bait them using a fake email address and alias. Then you can convince them to do stuff to prove they are real or make up stuff that they are required to fill out before they can send it to you. I always make up ridiculous fake documents that are 'required by law' in order for you to buy in your state/country, etc.

The list goes on. LOL

Be careful when attempting this though, as they are still criminals.

Anyways, I got to go! A Prince and Princes need my help because they are stuck in a war torn country who happen to have millions of dollars that the military will seize if I dont help them quick...!

Sounds like a jolly good time! Time to go fishing! Need to go take some cell phone pics of a random car and post it for sale. :D
