From what I've been reading this seems common with ornates.
My ornate is the same way, as soon as he sees me in the room he splits into his cave.

He was like that when I first bought him, but after a few months he got use to me... I actually had him trained to follow my finger when it was feeding time(I would help him find sinking pellets before the sengals got it).

However, ever since I moved my bichirs from a 20g to a 125g the ornate just sits in his cramped up cave and sulks.

So frustrating...

he's mad at you cuz you took away his yummy food away(pictus cat). I suggest you add another pictus to make it up to him/her j/k

man, haven't posted in a while, here's something I have tried, hopefully, it helps.

at night, substitute your cave with a clear glass jar that fill fit your bichir, and let him use that; the bichir should still feel secured in the jar, and you can observe your bichir since its a glass jar.

Also, if you aren't squeamish, use large earth worms to entice it; totally worked on my bichirs.
