Hi all,
I am a new member here and had a couple questions for you guys.

I picked up a kelberi a few months ago at the LFS and he is about 7-8" now. I keep him in a 120 gallon grow out with a VATF. I am running an FX5, with regular water changes of 25-30%. I keep my water parameters at 0 ppm Ammonia, 0 ppm Nitrites, and 10~ ppm Nitrates. For some reason he is always scared (mostly when people come around the tank) he always hides at the very top behind the filter intake and only comes out when nobody is near the tank.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

The kel should be a little more comfortable in the tank by now,are you sure the tiger fish is not harrassing it?

100% I just added the tiger fish 2 weeks ago, and the kel has been scared way before then.

So the kel has been alone in the tank previously?...many fish tend to act that way when they've been kept alone in a tank.Like I said earlier though the kel should come around eventually as long as the ATF does not bother it and maybe sooner with a few more tankmates....two more kels for it to interact with would be nice.

He was with an occellaris before but that one died about 2 months ago. Could I do another species of cichla, or only other kels?

No,you needn't only keep kelberi other species should be fine. That was my personal preference talking as the kels are my favorite species though I have mixed them with others without any real issues.

Glad to help and good luck.

I too would add some more kelberi. Kelberi are sissies and will most likely get bullied by other species of bass. Add a couple more kelberi and a few 3-5 silver dollars and that will also help.
