This might sound a little dumb but are p's afraid of light because today they were acting weird. When the light was on they would hide in a corner, really close to the rocks. then when it was off they would come out, its really weird i think. They were never scared before. usally i keep the light on during the day then turn it off at night and they were kool.

how long have you had em? When use to keep rbp's they use to go NUTS whenever i turned on the light. This was only when i first got them though.

maybe they just had their fill of light try keeping the lights dim in the tank i did this by suspending my light higher off the tank also wrapping screen around the light works as well my p's were the same way till i added a black background and blaack gravel and move my light up a bit to darken everything then they were very active

This seems to becoming a more known issue in recent time. I personally think that the piranha get exposed to so much uncomfortable light, they sort of ‘snap’. Imagine being a creature made for merky darkish waters, but being exposed to strong light for hours a day. You would just snap under the circumstances. Your best bet is to put out the lights, and start re-introducing them to light slowly. If that fails and they refuse to allow much light at all, there are certain measures you can take such as:

-Dimming the lights by covering them
-Adding black gravel and black background
-Putting floating plants in the tank
-Adding black water extract

you could dimmed the lights and set them on a timer about 10-12 hrs aday...i had some issue with my sanchezi but i never dimmed the lights just set the timer now hes very active and doesnt swim and hits the glass when the lights turn on
