I just have a quick question about scat. Ive seen more and more different types for sale. I know it says brackish, would well water be considered brackish?

TDS is around 1100
GH is 15+
Ph is at 8

My water is pretty hard, is that okay to keep scat? Also ive never kept scat before but they look like a brackish equivalent to silver dollar, any chance these guys could be dithers?

Brackish water refers to the salinity content rather than the hardness of your water. I'm not super familiar with scat in general, but I always thought they tolerated brackish as young and then needed increased salt levels closer to marine type as they got larger. I don't think they'd make good dithers in a freshwater tank.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also they are nothing like SD. The spotted scat has a poisonous dorsal spine. Why would you want them for dithers? They will not survive in complete freshwater.

I can see the appeal of scats as dithers and I'm sure someone on here keeps them very successfully in fresh water. I think it was the vertical bar stripey obes- can't remember the name. Not sure why their being mildly venomous would stop people wanting them.

I had a tiger scat and I can tell you they are not good dither. They are one of the most aggressive fish I have owned.

I've kept them in pure fresh for a year but then slowly converted them to full salt. They would not be great dithers though because they chase around fish a lot. They're pretty aggressive and get pretty big

I've seen scats in full freshwater but they don't thrive. If you could make it at least 1.003 you'll probably be fine. You'd be suprised how many fish can thrive in light brackish. But always do your research first.

I've always wondered the same thing.. I really hoped they would make good dithers too, with the feces eating and all haha

Go with geophagus. Awesome looking fish and will never fin nip. Best dithers ive ever had. Especially altifrons or red heads.
