As I'm getting more and more serious about my DJ and photography steeez, I'm finding myself nervous of losing everything in the event one of my computers crash. I figure an external hard drive is the way to go. Only problem is I know nothing about these things, or computers in general for the most part.

Anyone care to point me in the direction of something cheap, reliable, and decently sized? Many thanks!

Western Digital 1 TB external is the way to go---People also swear by seagate products...

They are the best invest you will probably make man...Tons of storage...Fast as well-Basically once hooked up-You will have to go to my computer and hit the drive or the prompt at first when you plug it in......It's easy as pie man---Certainly dont let this detour you---Once you got it you will love it...

^ I agree, those two are the best two drives out there.

Edit: oppps, you beat me on your post. The 500gb sounds good too.

Also, I can use an external HD to transfer programs/files between computers, right?

No, you need a direct link between the computers.

Edit: I'm slipping. First I said yes... then no.... but The correct answer IS yes. I need a nap

Go with 1TB. There is a lot of leeway in prices, plus its better to overkill than underkill when dealing with memory. If you use up that 500GB (which is you prob will if you're shooting photos that take up 4-7 MB a piece and then add samples and tracks to it) it will be a holy pain to transer it all to a new HD. If you don't have a 500GB HD on your computer, you won't be able to transfer it all in one fell swoop, you'll have to do it in increments, and it can take a while.

Check around on e-cost.com, newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, outpost.com. All of these will have 1tb name brand HDs from time to time. I like WD, but to be honest any name brand will last you quite some time given the amount that they actually spin.

You can transfer files between computers, programs get a bit dicey. This will vary with the individual program. If you install it on one computer you will have to reinstall it on the other. There are work around but they tend to be unstable and any Windows OS (XP or earlier haven't used Vista or 7) gets really upset with you for trying.

western digital is the king of hard drives. i bought a wd elements 640 gb for 80 under a year ago. its not that kind in your link. its plug and play in general and anyone can get it to do what you want.

i took a good amount of time to fill it up and its full of blu ray movies. im thinking you dont need that much space since its mainly pictures. but with hard drives its more about what your willing to spend i guess and not really on gb. if that makes any sense..

250gb cost 45 and a 500gb cost 55:screwy:. might as well right
