I've always been a fan of photography, but up until now have never veered away from your standard digital point and shoot cameras. I've finally got things in order and want to make somewhat of a commitment and go the digital SLR route. I've narrowed my camera choice to the Canon Rebel XTi. Where I go sideways is when it comes to lenses. I realize the standard 18-55 kit lens is nothing special. Can anyone recommend another all-around lens to get me started? Or should I just stick with the kit lens until I'm comfortable with something else?

I guess its worth noting that the majority of what I plan on shooting will be landscapes, cars, and people.

I've got a ton of questions after this one, so be ready :naughty:

the XTi is a great body to start with. how much are you looking on spending on a lens? are you planning on getting the kit with the lens or just body? i purchased the body and the canon 50mm f/1.8 lens(about $75 new). its a cheap lens but takes great pictures and is perfect for low light. the only thing is no zoom with it. i now have the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. i love it. i use it mostly for taking pictures of people, fish, my dog and cars. its a great lens and people compare it to canon L lenses. i got it for $400 used. if you're gonna go with the XTi, join this forum and read up. you will find alot of information on lenses and other things you may want(photography-on-the.net/forum). its pretty addicting and you'll end up spending alot of money, trust me ;)

It's all about lighting. Don't wait before buying the EX580?

Stick with the kit lens until you have a good handle on how the camera works. It will work for all the things you mention. I'd invest in a good flash before lens, especially regarding aquatic/people photography.

I hear the new 18-55mm IS is better than the older version, so if you're getting the kit lens I would try to get that one instead.
