I have a 250 gallon aquarium
-pair of jack dempsey
-6 firemouth
-common pleco ( 8 inch)
-2 rope fish
I was wondering what king of schooling fish would work with that stocking, i would like them to be mostly in the top part of the tank
I don't really care of the size of the fish, i just want to fill up the top of the tank

has someone owned those two ? the rainbowfish and giant danios ? the opinion would be awesome :)

My experience with Giant Danios was pretty short lived as they got eaten pretty quick by my Synspillum. But they are quick and get to a decent size. Might want to grow them out first though. How big are the jds?

I've kept Boesemani rainbows before. They tend to swim at all levels in the tank but mostly mid to bottom levels. The males are beautiful.

my jds are only 4 inches right now, i could probably grow them to about 3to 4 inches before putting them in the 250

Below are videos I took in Eden and Cristalino Cenotes in the Yucatan where JDs come from, as you can see, their most common schooling companions in nature are sailfin mollies (Poecilia velifera, latipina, and shenops)and gambusia. FMs are from the same area, and would also have the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicana) as schooling companions, although these tetras can be quite aggressive.
Below a video from Aktun Ha that shows Astyanax, sailfins, and Parachromis freidrichsthallii.
