Does anyone know if different species of tetra will school together like 6 neons and 6 rummynose for example or will they stay segregated

IME most species of tetra will not school with unlike species. I have seen, however, different species of corys shoal - but it's usually if there's an odd man out then he/she will tag along, e.g. 4 bronze corys and 1 peppered

Blue tetras, neons, and cardinals will school together in a large tank, as will lemons and glowlights, redeyes aren't schooling with smaller tetras, they are feeding on them. It depends on the tetras involved, tank size, plantings, tankmates, and school #s. Buenas aries tets will school with anything of similar size that will ket them (at least the ones I had).

I only had 3 blues with more than a dozen each of cardinals and neons, the tank also contained balas so it might have been a predation response

I had a big school of both neons and blue tetras together, but nothing in the tank larger than a lemon tetra.

it all depends as guppy said on various factors, but many fish from that are from the same genus and/or look similar will loosley school together (I.E. cardinals and neons, serpaes and blackskirts.)
