Schroeders -vs- Minnows

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very cool! i always loved watching them pounce on feeders

very nice rays too!!!

Good question. The minnows are not heat tolerant at all. They thrive in water less then 60 degrees. The rays are in 81.4 degree water. I was using the temperature shock to stun the minnows long enough for the rays to catch them.

Thanks.

I've noticed that as well the few times I've bought minnow for my gar. As soon as they hit that 80F water, most of them seem to go into shock and just twitch around a little bit. Makes them easier to catch, I guess. Some of them don't seem to be affected as much though.

Very cool vid, by the way. The only thing my rays pounce on are earthworms... :irked:

I was just replying to an email about the minnows. I wanted to share with everyone that I acclimated the rays to feeding time.

By this I mean that I only opened their container when I was going to feed them. Each time I opened the container I would drop in a few nets full of minnows and then close the container. This very particular stimulus allowed me to then switch the minnows with a gel based diet that had a customized "minnow" component.

They now eat gel based diet with no problem. -FM

That is awesome. Good model of an example of stimulus - response theory.
