The purpose was to see if it was possible to isolate certain genetic traits and transplant them to a completely different organism, and then see if they took hold without interfering with the host organism. These dogs will hopefully lead a completely normal life, and if they do, then we can work on isolating genes that are resistant to cancer and an array of pathogens and transplant them to humans. We could even transplant bat genes and end all diseases (sort of). (Bats have a really cool thing going on where they can be literally crawling with pathogens, but because of the way their immune systems work, it doesn't affect them, they're only carriers.)
