I picked up this 20ish? gallon homemade sump. It was used in a salt setup. I understand how it works, what I dont understand is the gap in the dividers...whats the point? Also, I thought sumps had to be somewhat deep, this one is 36x12.5x12.5 (LWH), to achieve the most water, am I wrong here? Ive never used a sump hence why i ask. Also, what size tank can I realistically use this on?...Heres a couple pics of it, has who knows what in it, it needs to be cleaned bad lol...although the calcified corals were kinda neat

That's a odd looking sump, not familiar with salt water sumps but height doesn't really matter to much. Height is better with wet/drys but with sumps as long as the media is submerged it fine.

Custom fit a sponge or shove filter floss into the gap between the dividers for mechanical filtration.

Looks like you need to buy a gallon or two of cheap white vinegar. Remove all of the deposits that you can then fill the tank up with vinegar and water and let it seep for a while. A pump to keep the vinegar and water circulating will reduce the amount of time it takes to dissolve the deposits.

Ill be cleaning it this weekend....i like the idea of the sponge in the gap....any idea the size of tank this may work on?
