It can be done but the patients required far exceeds that in most people. It will require buffing compound and a buffing wheel (see Harbor Freight or any tool supply).

if you buff to at too fast of a speed you will leave swirl marks in the glass i would use some rubbing compound and try that on a rag and your finger first it usually takes a long time that way or you could get out the buffer, but just run it at super low speed and keep checking your progess..
Scratches on the outside or inside?
If inside, once water is added most minor scratches disappear.

inside and i just did the fingernail check and i get a slight snag so it's a little deeper than i tought but still minor in just two ereas no bigger than your hand in the front
i see the scratches on my tank as a reason to get a bigger tank
