Hi folks, picked up a tank yesterday for my upgrade, i was going to build my 500g from ply/glass but this come up in the classified for free and thought its worth a go to see what its like. Either use the tank as whole or use the glass to build the ply/grp tank.

Its a 8`4" x 3.5` x 2.5`, it has 15mm sides and a double base of 15mm and 10mm. I would need to replace the back as its cracked which is easy enough to do, but it has some scratchs on the front panel at one end near the top and the other end just below half way down, they are all on the front panel from what i can see, the scratchs are around 12" to 18" and can be felt when running my finger nail down the glass.

Bit stuck also as in if they will be seen much when filled with water, i could use this side of the side tank as the back, and the new section as the front when i fit it, but then i dont want to go buying and fitting a new side when its not going to be safe with the scratch and if they will be seen easyly

Will it be safe as in not giving way with the scratchs in it?

thanks all

Thanks for the reply mate.

Is it worth trying to polish it out a bit as i have been reading iits a long hard step to do to get rid of scratchs.

I don't think you will be able to get deep scratches out of glass, or any scratches for that matter. I wouldn't even bother and use the new panel as the front like you stated.

There is holes for the bulkheads at the far end at the top of the panel which will be a viewing window and will need blocking up, so now i have thought instaed of blocking them off i mite aswell fit a new end section also for a neater look, but also at a cost of about another £80, MMmmm decisions decisions .

I'd be careful with the way it is sitting on the blocks and the pressure points its putting on the glass. I'd feel better if there was a larger base under there spreading out the load.

It will be ok, its got a 1 inch base and is sat on 2 inch thick polystyrene, i have been looking over it again and i have decided to reseal it all over once i have replaced the back and end panel. The silicon at the minute is full of hard white stuff, i think it had been a marine tank at some point.

cant wait to see it up and running

Me to mate, just need to knock a few holes through a few wall to get it in:naughty:

My wife must love me, only just finished the conservatory where it will be going through to from the front living room.
