I have a 72 gallon tank with malawi african cichlids. I have noticed that they have been scratching in the sand alot so much they moved all the sand in one spot. Why are they itching or scratching all the time? All Appear healthy and are eating.

I have heard this is a symptom of a parasite such as ick, carefully observe your fish, early action will make curing a disease simplest

my fronts and cichlids does that alot.. but i dont see anything.. do thye do it often though.. mine does it once a while

when i put salt in my gt tank, he rubs both sides and than stops. But i do see a small white spot on his pectoral fin, he is still eating and digging holes, as a matter of fact, he just massacred a pellet a second ago.

mine do it like everyday. I think I am going to find the best liquid or tablets to cure parasites and see how that goes. My venustus rub everyday. like turn on there side and swim against the sand. They have must all the sand away right to the bottom.

it a fish think LMAO =)

It's a good idea to make sure water parameters are ideal -- flashing can indicate high ammonia or nitrite levels, as well. It's always good just to be sure.

^ Was just about to say that, suprised no one else mentioned it earlier.

Your water paramaters could be off and you may be due for a water change. Mine do this every now and then when I don't get the chance to do a WC as soon as I would like, I would check your paramaters. Parasite is also another one but I wouldnt just go start buying things and dumping into you tank. If it is a parasite then figure out what it is first.
