Hello what should I use as a screen on my water pick up for the first few months because my fish will start out small and can get sucked in the pick uip tube?
you can simply go to the dollar store and buy some sponges or those foam clothe-like material used for scrubbing when taking a shower. You can simply wrap that around the intake tube and secure it with a rubber band. those materials are safe in the fish tank and i actually use those as my filtering medium inside my filters.
buy a ac 500 sponge cut it in half stap it in the middle slide over the intake tube. and place a rubber band around it to prevent it from falling off. Not only will the fry be safe it will pre filter your filter and make cleaning the actual filter alittle less work . Just take the sponge once every other day and rinse it out and place bac int he tank.
id go with the sponge/foam rather than netting... the netting is going to have the full force of yer drain which the fry might not be strong enough to out swim... foam on the other hand will act as a buffer... you shouldnt lose any suction it would just be more spread out.. the bigger the sponge the less chance of fry getting stuck to it..
Thanks for the info, it will be small fish but not fry size, the fish would be smallest 1 1/2 or 2 inches long and a little thickness to them and height to them too.
