I have a group of red hook SD, 4 inch in a somewhat peaceful SA community tank. My sd’s have v’d tails from what I assume is the result of in fighting amongst the group. The fins are not growing back and I am stumped on what to do to promote regrowth. The tank is 240g and I am well filtered with water changes every 3-4 days in the 50-75 percent range. I am treating with salt, have used Melafix and Artemis with no success.

Any thoughts?

Would cont with what ur doing. The fighting maybe on going and not allowing the fins to grow back. Would consider separating the fish.

Most of the time fins don't grow back on SDs is because of the continual fighting that occurs, typically when you are not in front of the aquarium.

There is one SD with perfect fins you think i should remove him? Seems to be the dominant.

How long have they been in the tank and how big is the group, when I kept silver dollars I found that the bigger the group the more the aggression and fighting is spread out. If they were only recently added then they might just be finding a hierarchy. A couple of mine had split fins after I added them and some healed but some didn’t so I think it’s just something that happens with silver dollars

if with time their fins don't start to grow back you could use some clove oil to sedate them and clip the tips of their fins to promote new growth.

Removing it won't change the situation, since the others will just continue the cycle. Having 10+ will change the dynamics of the group.
