Going good :headbang2

first month was a pian, second was not as bad but still worrisome, after that its a cakewalk.

Many things were suggested to me such as current and floating plants but all in all I found that constant change was what is needed to get them through those first few weeks of aggression, that and not fretting over torn fins and missing scales.

Dont get me wrong, floating plants and extra current do help some, but here are a few tips for aro community success:

1) change everything often, current, lighting, decoration all must be changed daily or as often as possible.

a)With the lighting I left my lights on 24/7 until they started up with the aggression, then switched them off 24/7 until they started the aggression again, etc etc.

b)With the deco you must change it every day if possible or they will make territories out of anything that reaches more than halfway up the tank, this includes tall driftwood and plants as well as floating plants.

c)With the current they will simply eventually find the calmest points and fight over that area, so that a constant switching of power head placement is needed.

2)Do not fret over torn fins and missing scales! This will happen! The most important thing I learned from arofanatics is that your aros will fight, some more than others but shredded fins and missing scales are common in the beginning stages of an aro comm.

If it helps your nerves try not to pay your tank much attention at first accept when necessary.......Only worry if an aro stops eating.

Nice tank and arowanas!

You see? You got it!

that is so cool. ive been waiting on this update for a very long time, lol

Yeah, it can be quite nerve wrecking when the fishes start to fight (one time one aro was chasing another one - it was serious cos one stopped eating). I kept moving them between two tanks until pecking order was established and accepted.

Interesting insight for getting a comm tank started. Mostly, I guess i have been fairly lucky with mines ... the greatest loss was arapaima getting eaten by RTC ... my aros and paimas and bichir getting along with no probs ^^
