Hi I was wondering if a sea snail from the Atlantic (coast of New Jersey) could be kept in an aquarium

The sea snail looks like this

Any Idea of an ID?

i had some periwinkles, prawns, and some anoemones in my reef tank. theyre all fine. well where till my hermits killed the snails for thier shells and the anemones got the prawns. i ID'd all my creatures first to make sure they could handle the tropical temps first. i also QT'd them first.

i live in the uk. the waters not rediculously cold, but its not exactly tropical. about 16 degrees C in summer. whatever you do, dont release anything back into the wild. and check your ok to take the animals from the beach in the first place. there are a lot of laws and regulations regarding removal of animals from thier enviroments in the US.

I had seen one of these snails on a flounder fishing trip over the weekend and it was big. the shell was the size of my fist and the body was bigger then a cup saucer.

We are going crabbing hopefully next weekend and thought it would be cool if we could catch one.

Just wondering if it would be okay in my tank.

well I never recommend taking anything from the ocean unless your licensed to however I would really research this snail species out before you take it from it's natural home. I would advise you to at least send a pic of it to Dr. Ron Shimik for ID. And, please reconsider taking it from the wild.

It is interesting to note that Peppermint shrimp can be collected as far north as southern New Jersey, and nassarius species as far north as Connecticut.
