Has anyone here ever tried putting dried up sea weed in a fresh water tank. This piece of sea weed I have looks stunning (not really like sea weed)

Will it affect the water perameters in any measurable way?

I plan on keeping malawis in the tank when it is finished.

would most definitely be affecting salinity.. but i think fishes wouldn't mind in small doses..

Even if the fish and water is fine, won't the plant die very quickly?

Its already dead. Thats why I wanted to put it in.

It looks like a minature tree. The only concern I have is that is may soften in the water and then the malawis will have a go at it.

I think that's coral, man.

Half right, it's a dried gorgonian skeleton. I'd be careful as it may (if you bought it in a store) be soaked in preservatives or it may rot if there's any of the old tissue (skin) that is simply dried up.

Personally I'd put it in a bucket for a few weeks and then test the water to see if it's leaching anyhing.

I think it should work fine. We had them in a malawi tank at the store I used to work at. If you're really worried just soak it for a week or so and keep changing the water out.
