Do any of you use Seachem Bio Matrix? Does it do a good job? For a regular canister would you use the regular or would the pond size be better?

Its good. I have it in a canister and it is fine. It does tend to break down over time especially if you are constantly rinsing it and knocking it up against itself during the process. I use the regular. I didn't know that it was made bigger for pond apps...interesting.

I current use over 40 liters of matrix bio across a total of 9 filters. It is great stuff and much less expensive than the Eheim substrat pro. It has the ability to reduce nitrates, but like most anything else, overstocking will defeat this too. Regular matrix bio is best for cannisters while Pond matrix (the larger type) has "reportedly" produced better results when used in a sump.

1 liter of pond matrix has less surface area than 1 liter of regular matrix. you can fit more exposed surface area of regular matrix in the same amount of space. 1 day ill try to make a drawing to better explain this. if you have enough of any bio material you can take care of any stocking because your BB levels will grow to match your load. use the regular matrix in you canister cause the amount is limited to basket size.

if you goto seachems site they recommend one or the other for canisters. I think it's pond matrix because of the amount of flow, but I could be mistaken.

What I am trying to decide is what size, I have never seen the matrix regular or pond and in this case some is going into a FX5 which I understand you have to be very careful not to let anything get to the pump on the bottom as it can tear it up? In my case the Eheim or Fluval Bio media will run allot more and I have read good things about Seachem?

I have my FX5 filled with regular matrix bio. All three trays are filled with matrix bio and the blue sponges on top. It works well. I have no personal experience with Pond matrix.

I've heard good things about it, but there are so many other options out there, my personal favorite is api chem stars, they never break down and they basically interlock. More expensive but I love em. I have no doubt that either work awesome and keep up with the bb and bio load, I just prefer synthetic materials as usually they will never degrade. My fluval bio max and cnodes have already begun to deteriorate after only 5-7 months in my fx5..... Not cool.
