Yes I know a lot of people don't like FX5/6 because of the design. I like them, going to continue to use them.

My question when it comes to matrix is the size of the media itself as I'm wanting to use it instead of the fluval ceramic rings to give it a shot. Question boils down to do I need a bag for the size of it to slip through the FX5 media trays?

No, it won't fall through. Make sure you rinse it really good. It has a lot of sand like particles that could get in the motor and impeller. Then you would wish you had an Eheim.

Atleast you made it good and funny telling me to switch lol. I did laugh at that one.

Rinsing before putting it in? Who does that :nilly:

They make 2 kinds of matrix, pond matrix is bigger

Yes I know, I was referencing the smaller one just matrix as I know it to be. Hence the question? Pond matrix a lot of people have said looks to be too big for a canister.

I use matrix in my fx5's, but use netted bags, seems to me that after every time I clean out my filter within a week week n 1/2 filters start purging like there getting clogged

I should have added that the pond matrix can be used without a bag, in a canister, which I have used.maybe a small canister might not fit well.should fit in fx5, I have a eheim2260

Been thinking about just saying to heck with the bags and using the fluval blue fine filter pads. Say tray 1 one ontop of the matrix and one on bottom, same for tray 2 but tray 3 only having matrix and one blue pad on the bottom of it. I can't see it slipping through the blue pads lol.

Thanks guys for the input, looks like it goes both ways and mostly preference.

I would think though that using pond matrix might give you slightly less surface area for your BB being so much bigger and having more wasted space. Almost like the difference between sand and rocks, while still the same composite, one is far less dense in a closed container. Not like it 100% matters when it comes to pond matrix as it's already regarded as a much higher surface area than the ceramic rings I'm using now. Just comparing oranges to oranges while ceramic vs matrix is damn close to apples and oranges.
