What is better both in terms of biological colonisation surface and value
Eheim EHFI substrate/pro or Seachem Matrix??

I can buy 4L of Matrix for $67 or 5L of EHFI substrate for $110 or the substrate pro for $130.

Seachem claims 500ml of Matrix treats 200L and "each litre of Matrix™ provides over 160,000 cm2 of surface, equivalent to over 40 litres of typical plastic ball media!"

Seachem 4L of Matrix should treat 1600L (425g) of water.

Eheim
claim 5L of EHFI substrate treats 450g (1700L) of water and has 450m² of surface area per litre. The pro substrate has the same surface area but is meant to be more efficient and it's shape prevents clogging and compacting.

One thing I also don't know about both products is if the are reusable?

I am sure they are but for how long are they effective?
When are they exhausted and need to be replaced??

I have not used my matrix long enough for a cleaning but I love the substrate pro it cleans well and you get (IMO) More flow due to less compaction. The price difference is big though. If I were to decide between the two and I had to pay I would go for the seachem matrix. If the money was not a big deal id go substrate pro.

Hope that helps.

I use 20 Ltr of Matrix in my sump Ramesh I was able to get the 20 Ltr bucket for $220 from Trans. I have found it to be the best biological filter media I have ever used. All you need to do is place it in you filter and forget about it it never needs replacing and will not clog. Eheim on the other hand will need replacing and is prone to clog so as far as best biological filtration for your money IMO Matrix wins hands down.

I was thinking that for value the Matrix seems great and I could get 8L for $135.
I don't no if and when it needs to be replaced!!

Check out this comparison I found on the Seachem website it's towards the bottom.

If you decide to use Matrix, I would recommend that you go to the local nursery and pick up a ten or twenty pound bag of pumice. It's the same stuff and you can get it for just a few dollars. I have a bag here at home and I have no doubt it work work well as a biofiltration medium.

I am sure there are many grades of pumice stone/rock you can buy.
It's just finding one that has the same porosity of the Matrix material but you may be on to a cheaper alternative though.
