does anyone else use this stuff? I just setup my second FX5 on my 220, one has 3 trays of BioMax and my new FX5 has 5L of Matrix. I am wondering if I will see any benefit from the matrix with the nitrates.

To reduce nitrates you need a flow rate of no more than 1 GPH for a 5L media capacity. From what I have read.

It is not the flowrate, but the fact that there cannot be oxygen in the water. Most associate this with a low flow rate just because the low flow rate lets the aerobic (normal, in aquariums) bacteria use all the oxygen before it hits the anaerobic (nitrate reducing) bacteria.

^ Right. Which is why I say you need a flow rate no more than 1 GPH with 5 L of media. The more media volume you have, the higher flow rate you can have. Unless you find a way of introducing non oxygenated water into a filter, then you can run a very high flow rate. Since this is really hard and near impossible to do, you need to run a low flow rate.

I think you may have took my statement wrong, thinking I meant you need a low flow rate for denitrification to take place, thats not what I meant though. My post was a little vague.

ok thanks guys, I wasn't counting on the nitrate. I just wanted to try something other then Biomax and it looked like I would of need 10L or of substrate pro to fill the FX5 because the 5L box looked so small...

do you think I should replace the top baskets with pre-filter? :naughty:
