I searched and im not sure if this is the right forum but here we go.. My question is in regards to stability.. Stability claims to detoxify ammonia. Does this mean the ammonia can still be found with a test kit?
Next question Purigen.. Does anyone use this in a reactor like you would use phospan???
Prime - Yes, since ammonia is converted to ammonium and most test kits are for total ammonia which is ammonia + ammonium
Stability - No, The BB in stability would convert the ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate.
Purigen - Somebody on MFK has already done that before. I just cant find the link. Sorry. Just make sure the purigen beads dont get out of the reactor. They are really fine. I suggust putting a filter floss just before the water exits.
From experience just recently on stability- I will never add this to a cycled tank EVER again.
I ended up with my fish getting ammonia burn and almost dying... had to put them in another tank- had a fishless tank for a week. Did 50% water changes every day in my fishless tank, and the ammonia was still as high as the tester reads.
I had to take everything out of the tank and start all over again...
I did however put it in an uncycled tank, and it's almost done cycling 2 wks later.. So new uncycled tank -yes- cycled tank -no-.
if u looking chemical to treat tap water API has just the right product for it and works great and its cheap.
stability is more like to jumpstart new tank, thats it no more than that, the API counter works great too but more expensive and u have to mix 2 chemical.
i have 0 experience with purigen, so i let people with first hand experience tell u their take on it

How can you be sure of that though? Tap water isn't constantly the same, those water treatment people are always screwing with stuff... chlorine and chloramine could have gone up, ph swing, etc.

I added it to 3 tanks- this happened to all 3 tanks, but the largest tank was the worst. I was able to save all fish- and only 2 fish in the 125 suffered from ammonia burn. The other tanks (30 gal and 90 gal) I was able to do water changes enough that things went back to normal.
All of my other 12 tanks which I did NOT add stability to stayed exactly the same. I do my every other day water changes on them, and the params are always perfect.
Another good thing about my township is that they are required to send out ahead of time when they do any changes to our water.
Note: all of my tanks are stocked fine, and they all have over filtration.
