Seahorses in the Aquarium: 5 Things You Should Know Beforehand

Hi All,

I began working with seahorses in the 1960’s, and remain both fascinated and frustrated by them. In 2001, I wrote a book about the Natural History and Care of Seahorses, but much has changed, for the better, since then. I thought the following might be of interest:

Can you tell me how to keep enough food to feed seahorses? I would like to raise all of the food they need. I am looking for some simple instructions on how to do it.

Hello,

You can buy brine shrimp eggs and hatch and raise them at home. Kits are available through tropical fish supply outlets. However, The dwarf seahorse is the only species that can survive on a diet comprised mainly of brine shrimp, all the rest need a wide variety of foods as described in the Atlantic Seahorse article above (pl see Original post). It's difficult to rear most. Mysid shrimp can be bred and raised at home, but they are difficult (cannibalistic) and expensive. An excellent option is to purchase seahorses that have already been acclimated to frozen foods, and to add live when possible. Please see this web site for information on purchasing captive bred seahorses that will accept frozen foods. best, Frank
